Aimee Anne Duffy (born 23 June 1984) is a Welsh singer, songwriter and actress. Born in Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales, she was introduced to Jeannette Lee of Rough Trade Records, which led to her signing a recording contract with A&M Records in 2007.

Following the release of the singles “Rockferry” (2007) and “Mercy” (2008), the latter reaching singles charts worldwide, Duffy released her debut album Rockferry in 2008. The album entered the UK Album Chart at number one, and became the best-selling album in the United Kingdom that year, with 1.68 million copies sold. The album was certified several times Platinum and sold over 7 million copies worldwide, spawning further successful singles. With “Mercy”, Duffy became the first Welsh woman to achieve number one on the UK Singles Chart since 1983, while Rockferry was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album amongst further nominations at the 51st Grammy Awards. In 2009, she won three Brit Awards for British Breakthrough, Best British Female and Best British Album.

Duffy, the Welsh singer known for her 2008 hit “Mercy”, spoke on Tuesday for the first time in years to tell fans that she had been silenced after days of rape, drugs and imprisonment.

“Many of you are wondering what happened to me, where I went, and why,” Duffy wrote. “The truth is, and believe me, I’m fine now, and I’ve been raped and drugged and detained for a few days.”

Duffy, whose full name is Aimee Duffy, took a break from the music industry in 2011 after his second album Endless fared poorly on the charts and with sales. In the following years she appeared in some films, but did not release any other albums and, according to Wales Online, has not posted on Instagram since October 2017.

In his Instagram article, Duffy wrote that it took a long time to recover and that she opened up to a reporter last summer. The interview about what happened to her will be released in the coming weeks, she said.

“You’re wondering why I didn’t choose to use my voice to express my pain? I didn’t want to show the world the sadness in my eyes,” she said in the post. “I wondered how can I sing from the heart when it’s broken? And slowly it’s not broken.”
