In November 2018, 56-year-old Anthony Sampieri dragged the little girl with the tip of a knife into the bathroom of a dance school in Kogarah, southern Sydney, and s*xually assaulted her for 40 minutes.
Sampieri died in an isolation unit at Long Bay Prison Hospital, where he was being treated for liver cancer. He only had a 60% chance of survival for the next five years.
Sampieri, an avowed ice cream user, appealed to the Criminal Appeal Court in February.
One of his previous victims said the verdict proved he had no remorse for his crimes.
“If Sampieri really had a remorse, he would refuse to inflict more pain and suffering on the victims than he has already done by telling his lawyers to go and kick the stones,” they said.
He became the first pedophile in Australia to be imprisoned for life for s*xually assaulting a child, setting a precedent for future cases.
Throughout the legal process, Sampieri used legal aid to fund his defense.
Judge Paul Conlon said during the sentencing that Sampieri had shown a “complete lack of empathy for the child” and that the attack was “a parent’s worst nightmare”.
“One can only imagine the confusion and increased anxiety she would have been in when he subjected her to the most horrific and humiliating s*xual abuse,” he said.
Sampieri wrapped a string around the child’s neck and then raped the child for 40 minutes while he was filming her attack.
Then he tied the girl’s hands with a drawstring from her shorts and toilet paper in her mouth so that she could not shout for help.
Leaving the bathroom shared by the dance studio and other businesses, he was confronted by the mechanic Nicola Gilio, who was helping the girl’s mother find her.
Mr Gilio grabbed him on the floor and immobilized him with the help of a dentist who rushed up to his office under the studio until the police arrived.
The rapist, who had his pants down and was covered in blood, told officers he was on drugs and said, “I shot and he came in and hit me and stole my meth.”
At the time of the attack, Sampieri was on parole after being released from prison in 2012 for raping a 60-year-old woman at her home in Wollongong.
In the months leading up to the shocking attack, Sampieri made s*xually explicit calls to 94 women, including a 71-year-old community choir treasurer, a chaplain and 20 realtors.
Last June, Sampieri pleaded guilty to ten cases in connection with the attack on a dance hall, including three cases of s*x with a child under the age of 10.
He also admitted being accused of making s*xually explicit and harassing phone calls to women in the past few months.
At an earlier court appearance, Sampieri admitted that he had repeatedly injected ice into nearby public toilets prior to the attack.
He said he was in such a state of s*xual arousal by the time he was in the dance studio facilities that he allegedly assaulted anyone who entered.
