Cleveland police were investigating a rape case in October 2009 when they ransacked Sowell’s home and found two bodies. Eventually they found the remains of 11 women.
Sowell was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to death for the murder of women. He was also found guilty of raping two other women and attempting to rape another.
He continued to appeal his case. In May, a three-judge panel of the 8th District Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that Sowell had not provided sufficient evidence that he had not received a fair trial and that his attorneys’ first instance procedures had been ineffective during the sanctions phase. The commission also upheld a lower court ruling denying Sowell’s request for post-conviction intervention.
