The 31-year-old is said to have drunk on a four-hour bus ride with teammates of his Clarets after his victory in Fulham last week.
But he was then stopped near his home in his £ 55,000 Mercedes V-Class people carrier.
He failed a breath test and was arrested, sparking manager Sean Dyche’s anger.
A source said: “Sean is a strict disciplinarian and expects a lot from his older players like Ashley.
“Some of the players drank and laughed for about four hours.
“But what isn’t funny is getting off the bus and getting behind the wheel of your car. Ashley is ashamed of what he did. ”
Barnes was a submarine in the 86th minute of the 2-0 win in Fulham last Monday night, which guaranteed Burnley top-notch football for another season.

He was then stopped by police near his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
Barnes, married to Suzanne, 33, was released on police bail and is due to appear in court on June 14.
The player, who has made more than 200 appearances for Burnley, is also facing a disciplinary hearing by the club.
A club spokesperson said: “Burnley FC maintains and expects the highest standards of responsible behavior from all players and staff.
“Therefore, the club will handle this matter with the utmost seriousness, with due regard for the conclusion of legal proceedings.
“The player is subject to internal disciplinary procedures.”
Two years ago, Barnes shared how he got the nickname “Ash-Cabs” after he and teammate Ashley Westwood bought a minibus to drive players around.
He said, “It’s just the standard [Mercedes] Viano. Eight of us jump most days.
“Most clubs probably don’t have many car sharing players, but we’re such a close group here.”
Cheshire police said, “On Tuesday, May 11th, at around 3am, officers stopped a black Mercedes V220.
“The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drinking and driving.
“Ashley Luke Barnes of Wilmslow was later charged.”
Barnes was on the bench for Burnley’s game against Liverpool at Turf Moor last night.
