Austin police issued a press release Wednesday morning in which the victim of an alleged suicide was reported as Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson, 43, was identified, a pediatrician with the Children’s Medical Group. Another pediatrician, Dr. Bharat Narumanchi, 43, is said to have killed Dodson before he committed suicide.
According to the press release, Narumanchi did not work for the Children’s Medical Group, but had applied for a volunteer position the week before. Narumanchi has reportedly been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Late on Tuesday afternoon, someone from the doctor’s office called the police to report that an armed man had entered the building and was taking hostages. Some of these hostages escaped; others were later released, with the exception of Dodson.
Hostage takers tried unsuccessfully to contact the suspect before deciding to break into the building, where they found the two paramedics dead.
It doesn’t appear that Narumanchi and Dodson were in any relationship other than possibly being in touch through the volunteer position. The suspect allegedly carried two guns and two sports bags.
Tribute posts on social media indicate that Dodson leaves three children. The authorities have not yet commented on a possible motive. The police are expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday morning.
