After Johnson’s body was discovered, Carter and Beck reportedly told police they had evicted him from their apartment two weeks earlier because he had moved in with them.
The Sun-Times reported that detectives initially treated the case as a death inquest, but changed course after the coroner ruled Johnson’s death as an assault.

Two months after Johnson’s death, a witness allegedly contacted authorities and implicated Carter, Beck and Gray in Johnson’s murder.

The witness reportedly woke up to hear Carter Gray tell him to come and help Johnson with the wash and change of clothes. Gray allegedly cleaned up the blood and dragged Johnson around the house as he could no longer stand or walk on his own.

Prosecutors once said Carter fired a gun at Johnson, but Gray convinced him to put it down.

According to the witness, Carter said he and Gray left Johnson’s body in an alleyway and called 911. Gray later told investigators Johnson was still alive when they left him, the Sun reported. Times.

Gray reportedly admitted his role in the murder and told police that Carter alleged Johnson exposed himself to Carter’s children. Gray was reportedly given $ 100 to clean Carter’s house.

According to the news agency, Beck confessed to previously forcing Johnson to drink cologne and carry heavy books for hours while squatting. Beck also reportedly said Gray was also involved in the beatings that killed Johnson.

Carter, Beck and Gray are charged with murder. Beck was also charged with negligence as a caregiver.

Carter and Gray were denied bail, while Beck’s bond was set at $ 1 million. The three suspects will appear in court on December 14.
