A uniformed NYPD officer was shot three times, including once wearing a bulletproof vest, in a shooting with a notorious gang member in Brooklyn Wednesday night, police said.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. Two officers and a sergeant from the 81st Ward were in an unmarked car on Macon Street and Howard Avenue in Bushwick when they saw a man “walking fast” and “wearing the body,” the police commissioner said. Dermot Shea at a morning press conference.

Officers got out of the car to investigate. At that point, the man “pulled out a gun, turned on the police and started shooting,” Shea said.

“The sergeant in the car is not shooting, and this is all preliminary,” added the CEO. “One of the officers fired 12 shots. One of the officers fired nine shots. We believe that the officer who fires nine shots, and we currently do not identify him when we finalize the notifications, will be hit three times. ”

The officer, identified Thursday as Brian McGurran, who turned four and was assigned to District 81, was hit with the bulletproof vest that stopped the bullet, as well as his buttocks and right leg, Shea said. They took him to the Kings County Hospital Center.

“Thank God the officer is here,” said the inspector. “He’s fine and he should make a full recovery.”

Suspect Identified

The suspect, identified by law enforcement sources as 26-year-old Boyce Hayward, a known gang member, was shot in the leg. He was arrested on the spot and a weapon was recovered.

Charges are pending against Hayward.

“Look, this is an example of extraordinary courage,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters. “Here, officials are in a situation where they see someone acting suspiciously. And they are going to do what we make them depend on to do something every day to protect other New Yorkers, and they do it with courage and courage to put themselves in harm’s way. ”

“But they did the right thing because, in fact, from what we’re seeing at the time, this person did harm and would have done more harm,” Hizzoner added. “And then our officers took action.”

Authorities are investigating whether the incident is related to an earlier fatal shooting five blocks away around 11:10 p.m. on Madison Street and Broadway in Bushwick.

In this incident, three men were in a white 2015 BMW pickup when another approached and shot them. He met the 21-year-old driver and 28-year-old passenger before taking off. The passenger was taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead and the driver in critical condition at Kings County Hospital, authorities said.

A third 22-year-old man in the car is unharmed, police said. According to Shea, the truck crashed shortly after the shooting.

The three inmates have “a long history of arrests” and are gang members with open envelopes, Shea said.

In his daily press conference Thursday, De Blasio praised McGurran as “the heroic officer who protects us.”

“It is an example of the dangers our officers face,” the mayor said, “but also a profound example of the heroism and courage that shows how much we depend on them and the cunning strategies of the NYPD to get officers where they are. . find. “necessary”.
