Bridger Walker’s family
Bridger Walker’s family say he protected his sister from a one-year-old German Shepherd mix that charged them on July 9.
“Tragically, the dog jumped up and clung to Bridger’s cheek instead of running away,” a CNN family statement said.
The brutal attack forced Bridger to have over 90 stitches and spend two hours on the operating table.
The doctors initially advised the Walker family not to seek treatment for Walker’s scars until after a year.
Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali
After Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, of New York, had heard Walker’s story, FAAD contacted the family to offer their expertise.
The boy and his family traveled to New York City, where he received the first in a series of scar treatments that would help him get his smile back.
“As the world and I celebrated Bridger’s incredible heroism and courage, I also thought about how the scars from this attack could affect her physically, mentally and emotionally,” Bhanusali said in a statement. Press. “It has been very rewarding to work with Bridger and his family and I am grateful to be working with Dr. Maughan so that Bridger can continue his care closer to home.”
Utah-based dermatologist Cory Maughan, DO, FAAD, coordinated Bridgers treatments with Bhanusali to aid her recovery process.
“Although we are across the country, Dr. Bhanusali and I work closely to ensure that Bridger receives the best possible treatment and that he and his family are satisfied with the care he has taken,” said Maughan. “After Bridger and her family have been through it all, we want to give her every chance that her scars are at their best.
Maughan and Bhanusali have both been recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology as patient care heroes for their life changing scar treatment.
