When Brittney Gosney reported to Ohio police on Sunday that her six-year-old son was missing, officers had no idea how history would change that day.

In a matter of hours, the case of a missing child turned into a murder investigation. Authorities were sent to the Ohio River, where the body of James Robert Hutchinson was dumped. And her 29-year-old mother was charged with murder, molesting a corpse, and manipulating evidence.

According to court records

Gosney told Middletown Police Division investigators that he tried to evacuate Hutchinson at Rush Run Park in Preble County on Friday.

When he tried to get back in the car, she accelerated, crushed him and pulled him “remotely,” the authorities said.

About 30 minutes later, Gosney returned to the scene, found him dead in a parking lot with a head injury, drove him back to his home in Middletown and, according to the criminal complaint, took the body to an upstairs bedroom.

The next day, she and boyfriend James Hamilton, 42, went to a secret location on the Ohio River and, according to the document, tossed the body into the water. The authorities have not yet found his body.

Like Gosney, Hamilton was accused of molesting a corpse and manipulating evidence, police said. He’s not facing a murder charge.

A judge set Gosney’s bond at $ 1 million and Hamilton’s bond at $ 100,000 on Monday, NBC subsidiary WWBT said. On Tuesday it was not clear whether they had lawyers.

Middletown Police Chief David Birk said at a press conference Monday that Gosney “doesn’t show much remorse at the moment”. No reason was given in the case.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 8th.

Two other children who lived in the couple’s home were taken away, police said.

Middletown is a city about 38 miles north of Cincinnati.
