A young girl who had suicidal thoughts since the age of ten had to leave a nearly empty infirmary the day before her death.
Although Brooke Firth asked doctors to let her stay, she was released from Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield three days after taking a packet of pain medication.

Grandmother Rosemarie

The day before her release, the 16-year-old told her grandmother Rosemarie, who was sleeping next to her in one of the ward’s many empty beds, that she did not feel safe at home. she and therefore wanted to stay in the hospital – she could not hurt herself.

On the evening of October 12, 2017, Brooke said goodbye to her family and walked through South Hiendley in the sunshine.

Not long after, her younger brother’s friends thought they had stumbled upon a Halloween prank when they found Brooke’s body in a tree, a hospital sign still on her arm.

A little over three years after their deaths, Mother Michelle and Grandmother Rosemarie remain convinced that the hospital should have listened to Brooke and allowed her to stay in a safe place.

“We think she felt worthless and not worth the trouble,” Rosemarie told the Mirror.

“She was completely disappointed – she was released after asking for safety.

“She asked three times to be safe so as not to get hurt.

“Brooke’s suicide was predictable and preventable.

“Brooke didn’t want to die, but it was always when she was having her period that she couldn’t take it.”

She added: “He asked to be kept in a safe place but he was exposed.”

Rosemarie and Michelle urged those in positions of power and care to listen as much as possible to teens struggling with their mental health.

“I think she felt worthless and disappointed when she was released,” Rosemarie continued.

“She realized that her mother and I couldn’t help myself.

“She said I wanted to go to the hospital and stay there.

With her father completely irrelevant, Brooke spent much of her teenage years jumping between her mother’s house and her grandmother’s.

While remembering a happy and fun daughter, at the age of ten Michelle and Rosemarie found themselves in the same heartbreaking and difficult situation that thousands of parents have every year.

Brooke began to suffer from severe drops in her sanity that coincided with her period.

Michelle feared her daughter had committed suicide and immediately sought help from CAHMS – the NHS children’s mental health service.

Until her death six years later, Brooke remained in contact with the service and received medical advice and appointments.

Michelle links most of Brooke’s mental health issues to her father, who left the family at the age of eight and has never reconnected.

Brooke felt abandoned, lacked confidence and was prone to deep depression.

During her teenage years, Brooke told family doctors three times that she felt suicidal, including once during a counseling session with CAHMS when she was 10 years old.

As she got older, she became more and more confident when she made new friends and dated her friend, ”Rosemarie recalls.

Where once desperate not to attract attention, Brooke began to stand up in her teens and helped her teacher start a girls’ rugby club.

“She wasn’t wearing a dress to her prom, she was wearing black skinny jeans, brogues, a white shirt and a black fitted jacket,” Rosemarie said, jokingly adding that “Brooke didn’t want to attract the Warning.”

“She was in the middle of the picture of all the girls in their clothes. Everyone wanted their picture taken with her, boys, girls and teachers included.

“Brooke was out recently too. For someone who goes out in the village, this is gossip.
