Northumbria police confirmed tonight that a 49-year-old man has been arrested near Glasgow on suspicion of murder following the attack.
Superintendent Paul Milner said: “In recent days, our officers have been conducting investigations in the area and north of the border.
These investigations resulted in the arrest of a man suspected of Caroline’s murder and the serious assault of a teenager.
“We want to assure the public that this was an isolated incident and that they were never in danger.”
Ms. Kayll had worked for a school that cared for children with social, emotional and psychological problems.
In a statement, Seghill School, Cramlington said: “Our school community is saddened to learn of Caroline’s death.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very difficult time.”
A 58-year-old man arrested earlier this week on suspicion of helping an assailant has been released under investigation, police added.
