A West Virginia police officer died two days after a suspect shot him while responding to a parking complaint

The city of Charleston announced the death of Agent Cassie Johnson in a news release Thursday. Johnson, 28, entered the city as a human officer in October 2017 and was sworn in as a patrol officer in January 2019.

Cassie was an exemplary cop. He embodied everything the Charleston Police Department is and wants to be: courageous, compassionate and selfless to the citizens of the city he loved, ”Police Chief Tyke Hunt said in the statement. His legacy will live on in the officials. and in the citizens he touched and inspired every day ”.

The city flags were lowered to half the staff.

“We are devastated by the loss of Cassie,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “She was always willing to help out in any situation. The city of Charleston is a safer and more vibrant place because of Cassie, and we are grateful for her service.”

Joshua M. Phillips, 38, of Charleston, is charged with shooting Johnson, said Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford. Phillips was also injured Tuesday and arrested shortly thereafter. He remained in the hospital. No immediate charges were filed.

Phillips was released on bail after a weapons-related arrest in January 2020, according to a criminal complaint, News reported.

Tributes to Johnson come from state officials.

“I know that our entire home state is grieving for a first responder who is selfless and willing to put himself in harm’s way to protect and serve our communities,” said Senator Joe Manchin.

US Senator Shelley Moore Capito told the Senate that everyone should recognize the sacrifices made by the police.

“Cops like Officer Johnson never know what’s going on here,” Capito said. “You never know. He thought he was going to commit a parking ticket. It’s hard work and rarely appreciated enough.”

Sgt.Brian Humphreys, the sheriff’s spokesman, told the Charleston Gazette-Mail that the call to the police station came Tuesday after Phillips parked a vehicle in a driveway other than his own. Phillips then went to a house across the street. After leaving the house, Phillips was greeted by Johnson and the two began arguing.

Humphreys said Phillips would use his own pistol to shoot Johnson and slap her once in the face. According to Humphreys, Johnson shot Phillips and hit him twice in the upper body. It is not known who fired first, although Johnson likely fired a gun first, the spokesman said.
