Devin Dodson, 24, of Wentzville, and Deangelo Williams, 30, of St. Louis were charged on Monday by the St. Charles County District Attorney’s Office for the second degree murder of Chaise Dunlap, a 27-year-old veterinarian , who died after the bout on Was on life support outside a Wentzville bar early Saturday, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Dunlap’s mother, Cresent Dunlap, told the newspaper Monday that her son died of a severe head injury after being attacked outside the Lava Lounge Hookah and Bar, where several fights erupted that evening.
“Police told us there had been a fight in the bar,” Cresent Dunlap told KMOV. “My son tried to end the initial fight. My son was not in the initial fight but had an argument. One of the boys hit him on the head. ”
Cargo documents show Williams was heading for his car when Dunlap followed him and shouted racist slurs. Williams told investigators he then punched Dunlap before going in his girlfriend’s car to jack out a trunk, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Williams said he saw Dodson in the field fighting Dunlap and claimed to hit the vet on the head and neck with the jack – to end the fight, court documents show.
But video of the brawl showed Williams beating Dunlap twice after being knocked unconscious, police said.
Investigators later discovered a jack from Williams’ girlfriend’s car that appeared to have blood on it, court documents show.
Dodson and Williams Arrested
Dodson and Williams, who were arrested at the scene, saw their first assault charges improve after Dunlap’s death, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Williams has also been charged with armed criminal acts.
Dunlap, who lived in Old Monroe after retiring from the military in 2017, worked for Boeing and is survived by a 4-year-old daughter, her mother told the newspaper.
“He was just a great guy,” said Cresent Dunlap. “He loved to hunt and fish. He was nice. ”
Dunlap died early on Sunday, relatives told KMOV. An online fundraiser to offset funeral expenses exceeded $ 2,300 on Tuesday.
“Dunlap Chair lost the life of the person he was raised to stand up for and stood up for what was right,” the site read. “That night, Chaise intervened and stood up for a woman who was assaulted, a woman he didn’t even know. It’s just Dunlap Chair, respectful, honorable and courageous.
