Weiland had previously been suspended from the team
Weiland had previously been suspended from the team over the text message and video, which were only announced publicly on Monday, but were later reinstated by coach Avery Anderson.
He was then permanently banned on Tuesday after the video surfaced using the N-word and homophobic and sexist slurs while complaining that a friend left him for an African American. According to the Los Angeles Times, the incidents occurred before Weiland enrolled at UCLA in the fall of 2019.
“When I first found out about this a few months ago, I was disgusted and immediately suspended him from the team indefinitely,” Anderson said in the statement. “Even in my disgust as a coach, I always intend to lead, educate, and implement the changes I want to see in this world.
“It became clear that his continued involvement with the team was inconsistent with the culture of mutual support and respect we cultivate,” continued Anderson, who is African American. “I now realize that the decision to reinstate him was not the right one and that today’s action is best for the good of our team.”
On Monday, an Instagram account with the handle ‘@ucla_is_racist’ published several posts in which someone who allegedly is Weiland makes racist comments on videos and text messages. The same report claimed in a headline that “this racist behavior was demonstrated to coaches and the sporting director months ago,” but stated that “Chris Weiland is still on the team”.
In the video that the LA Times reviewed, Weiland appears to complain that a friend left him for someone else: “When she said she didn’t want to get back together, why do you think? It’s because she wants to be with this damn fuck that has no future. She’s going to be with some stupid sucker who’ll be in community college all his life.
“He’s probably living in the bloody ghetto.”
At the end of the video, Weiland can be seen wearing a UCLA sweatshirt.
@Ucla_is_racist also posted a text message in which Weiland apparently accused a woman of being unfaithful.
“You really tied up a F *** ING BUM A ** N ***** with nothing that goes for him,” read the text message. “A BROKE A ** STUPID A ** N *****.”
In another caption, Weiland is accused of using this type of language repeatedly and not being held accountable by the school.
“After this racist behavior was demonstrated to the coaches and the sports director months ago, Chris Weiland is still on the team wearing and representing a BLM patch,” wrote @ucla_is_racist on the Monday before his release.
The last time it ran was on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona.
In response, UCLA’s Black Student-Athlete Alliance condemned the school for failing to fire Weiland.
“As a university committed to promoting the achievements of its black athletes who have broken the barriers to social justice, it is deeply disturbing to learn that UCLA knew of an incident of manifest racism, homophobia and sexism and took minimal action. ” Read the statement.
‘We at the BSAA refuse to accept the actions of this athlete as well as the lack of action by coaches, staff and administration to solve the problem.
