Pennsylvania authorities arrested Friday, charging Matthew Zeigler, 48, and Christine Zeigler, 50, after a seven-month investigation.

The couple are accused of assaulting their eight children, which has continued since 1994.

Police began investigating the couple, according to the report, after Matthew Zeigler allegedly shot a gun twice through a window as he argued with his wife Christine Zeigler. At the time, there were five children at the house and an 18-year-old girl was outside the house in Williamsport.

When the children were questioned, they said they were physically and emotionally assaulted by both parents, the TV station reports, citing the Pennsylvania attorney general.

The children said they were beaten by their parents, forced to consume harmful fluids and locked in a cupboard for a week without being fed or watered.

Authorities also claim that Matthew Zeigler touched his underage daughters badly, especially while drinking, KDKA-TV reports.

The children reported that Matthew Zeigler was generally the parent who imposed the cruel sentences, but Christine Zeigler observed and intermittently participated in the abuse.

Prosecutors have charged Matthew and Christine Zeigler with eight child welfare threats, while Matthew Zeigler is separately on several other counts.

“We arrested Matthew and Christine Zeigler today for decades of assaulting their eight children,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in a KDKA-TV press release. “These helpless children have been brutally abused for a long time. The conduct of these parents was reprehensible and we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. ”

The couple lived in Williamsport, Pa., A town of about 28,000 people about 85 miles west of Scranton.
