Abercrombie was wearing a uniform and armed with a gun when he forced the woman to take off her pants and pressed her against a table before rubbing her genitals without consent, law enforcement officials said in an arrest warrant.
Abercrombie, 34, is charged with first degree criminal s*xual conduct, kidnapping, robbery and other charges. If he is found guilty, he faces life imprisonment. On Friday he stayed in the Greenville County Jail. Court and prison records did not show whether he had a lawyer to comment.
Sheriff Hobart Lewis said internal investigators began investigating Abercrombie as soon as they heard the allegations and he was released the next day.
“It was immediately clear that Mr. Abercrombie had violated his oath and that under no circumstances would shameful behavior be tolerated in my office,” Lewis said in a statement.
