Lancaster County Assistant Coroner Eric S. Bieber confirmed in an email to Fox News Wednesday that Helen has cerebral palsy. The cause of death or other details were not immediately released.
Manheim City Police Chief Tom Rudzinski told Fox News by phone that Helen was using a wheelchair, some local media reported, but could not confirm whether she was being detained there.
No reason was released Wednesday.
Rudzinski said the community was trying to find out how the tragic event happened.
“I think the community wants to know why,” said the chief. “But since we are here today, we will probably never know why.”
According to a Lancaster Online police report, officers found Helen lying on her back with her hands near her head and a bloodstained pillow on her face.
Investigators found that Helen was stabbed overnight with a knife known as a “big knife” while the girls’ parents slept. No further details were immediately available, which led to the incident.
Claire Miller was enrolled in the eighth grade at Lancaster Country Day School, a private school with about 600 students near her home.
Principal Steven Lisk told the newspaper that the private school community was “confused” and “was just trying to make sense of the tragedy.”
“Parents all over the world love their children, and all parents, I know myself, the idea that their life will become a penny and change is a terrible reality for a parent,” Lisk said. “So our hearts go out to them together.”
Claire Miller was arrested at the scene Monday. The 14-year-old was incarcerated in the Lancaster County Jail on Wednesday.
She was charged as an adult because murder is not considered a crime in Pennsylvania.
