Incident Details

Corbin was 15 years old at the time of the shooting. According to court records, Corbin was sleeping on the couch on August 20, 2019 when her father Matt Redman left for work around 5 a.m. Corbin’s mother, Mary Redman, and her 13-year-old sister left the house around 7:45 a.m. this morning, leaving Corbin and Addison alone at home.

Later that morning, Corbin was “hysterical” when he contacted his father and told him that Addison was injured, reports the Morning Sun. The father contacted a colleague and asked him to verify Addison. Mark Redman testified that he was almost an hour from home as his colleague was closer to him.

Matt Redmond’s colleague came home first to find Addison on the couch with a gunshot wound to the head. Mary Redman then returned home, followed by Deputy Al Schafer of the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office.

Schafer said Corbin told him that he was riding a bicycle and that he returned home to find her sister injured by a shotgun. Corbin later issued a statement to the police station. His story remained constant at the time, authorities said.

At Redman House, investigators found that the parents’ kitchen and bedroom were a mess. They also noticed a locked suitcase and a 20-gauge Mossberg rifle hanging on the wall. After running the tests, investigators found Corbin’s fingerprints on the Mossberg rifle.
Investigators also tested the clothes Corbin was wearing on the day in question. The results showed that Corbin’s shirt had bullet residue on it. He was later arrested and charged with manifest murder.

Defense attorney Joshua Blanchard was charged with failing to conduct a thorough investigation and search for another suspect. Due to COVID and a series of delays, Corbin’s hearings have been repeatedly delayed.

Corbin pleaded guilty

On Monday morning, Corbin pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless or reckless discharge of a firearm. It was the first time that Corbin had publicly assumed responsibility for the shooting.

“Corbin admitted that he accidentally or carelessly fired the rifle that killed his sister,” said Gratiot County District Attorney Keith Kushion.

An appointment hearing is scheduled for April to determine whether Corbin should be sentenced as a teenager or an adult. He became a ward in the state until age 21 when he was sentenced for being a young man. He will spend up to two years in prison if he is charged as an adult.

The Morning Sun reports that sentencing will go to Judge Shannon Schlegel in the 29th Circuit Court.

“There are no (means) (how to proceed). It is up to the judge, ”Kushion said.
