The incident occurred in 2018. The video was hidden from the public for more than two years without the internal investigation moving.
11Alive’s investigation team, The Reveal, told prosecutors it was starting to look like a cover-up. Paul Howard ordered that the video be released as one of his final acts of him, shortly before stepping down as a prosecutor.
11Alive also reported that year that Roswell had two series of books. In this case, no mention was made in a police report of the officer who handcuffed the man. 11Alive received the full police report, which included six additional pages of the officer’s story not included in the public copy.
All charges against the suspect were immediately dropped after The Reveal investigators alerted the man’s prosecutor and asked the prosecutor for a copy of the video in 2018.
A week after the charges were dropped, Officer MacKenzie resigned from the division.
Now, nearly three years after the incident, MacKenzie is being charged with criminal charges.
Since The Reveal’s investigation, Roswell has changed its policy and publishes full police incident reports.
No arrest warrant has yet been issued against former officer MacKenzie.
