The Happy Go Lucky boy was sleeping when a suspect identified by police as 18-year-old Darriynn Brown stormed into his home through a back door and kidnapped him on Saturday, his mother said.
The boy’s grieving mother said she had no idea what allegedly led Brown to target her son, whose body was discovered by a jogger on the street later early Saturday. The juvenile suspect didn’t know Cash, his mother told the station off-camera.
The surveillance video also captured the kidnapping, said the boy’s mother. Investigators asked the neighbors for additional footage on Sunday to find out what happened, the WFAA reported. Some local residents said Brown Station can be seen regularly in the Mountain Creek section of the city.
“It’s hard to believe,” said neighbor Jose Ramirez of the boy’s murder. “I don’t think [Brown] was sane.”
Cops searched the neighborhood over the weekend after finding the boy’s body, Ramirez said.
“They were back in the alley looking through dumpsters to see if they could find any evidence,” he told the WFAA. “They went down the street and had a good time down there.”
Another resident, Katie Guillen, brought flowers to a makeshift memorial where the 4-year-old’s body was found.
“It’s just so sad that someone woke up this morning and lost their child without warning,” said Guillen. “How do you throw someone away like they’re nothing? He’s someone’s child.”
Cash’s twin brother is now in state custody, his mother told the WFAA.
Dallas police said in a statement Sunday that Brown had been charged with kidnapping and theft. After a forensic analysis, additional fees are expected in the murder investigation, the authorities said.
Brown was held in Dallas County Jail on Monday on a $ 750,000 bond, records show. It is unclear whether he has hired a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
The boy, who was not identified by authorities, was found on the street with no shirt or shoes and likely died before 5 a.m. on Saturday, the Dallas Morning News reported.
“We are shocked, we are very angry about what happened to this little child,” said Albert Martinez spokesman for the newspaper.
Brown was arrested in late April for evading arrest, the Morning News reported. Court documents show he lived with his parents, only half a mile from where the boy’s body was found. Brown’s stepfather meanwhile declined to speak when reaching for comment, the newspaper reported.
Brown had been ordered to wear an ankle monitoring bracelet in connection with the previous charge, the WFAA reported.
