An off-duty LAPD official was shot and killed in a robbery while searching the house with his girlfriend, authorities said on Tuesday.

Agent Fernando Arroyos, 27, and his girlfriend were crossing a street in a neighborhood in South Los Angeles at around 9:15 p.m. When a truck carrying three men approached on Monday and attempted to rob the couple, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said.

The three men “got out of the vehicle and confronted our officer and it appears the target was an attempted robbery,” Moore said. “According to the information we have, one of the suspects pulled out a gun ahead of time. The officer yelled at his girlfriend to go, run … get back in the car. ”

Los Angeles County Sheriff officials said Arroyos was shot in the altercation that took place at the 8700 Block on Beach Street in an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the officer on leave lying in an alley with at least one gunshot wound to his body.

Officers took him to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he later died of his injuries.

The suspects fled in their vehicle, identified as a black van, with an unknown destination.

Sheriff officials said three men and two women were arrested in connection with the shooting. Their names were not disclosed and no one was charged until Tuesday afternoon.

At the scene of the crime, two weapons were recovered, Moore said.

Sheriff officials said a second man with gunshot wounds was found a few miles from the area where the duty officer was attacked. This stranger was taken to a local hospital. Investigators have not yet determined whether this person was in any way linked to the fatal shooting in Arroyos.

Police vehicles escorted the body of the St. Francis Medical Center officer to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office early Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed his condolences on Twitter Tuesday, saying, “Our hearts are broken by this tragic loss to our police force and our city. I join all of Los Angeles in mourning today and include my loved ones in my prayers. ”

Arroyos had been in office for three years and outlived his mother and stepfather. He was an only child, Moore said.

“He had a bright future … which was brutally stolen from him in a street robbery,” Moore said.
