A Memphis man is behind bars after police said he shot a woman 13 times while her children were nearby.
Police documents state that Freddie Whitaker contacted her girlfriend and told her he was leaving her. He also said he would come to her house to pick up her things.

He told Whitaker he couldn’t come, but he insisted and said he would come anyway, according to the MPD.
When he arrived at his home in Brower, near Park Avenue, he began arguing with the victim while his 10 and 6-year-old sons sat nearby.
According to the MPD, Whitaker pulled out a gun and started shooting the victim. He hit the thighs, stomach and lower left chest 13 times. Then he fled the scene.
Officers said the victim fled a relative’s home with her children. She from there she was transferred to Regional One in critical condition.
As officers patrolled the highlands and central plateau, they observed a silver Nissan Altima traveling at 65 mph in a 35 mph zone. When the agents stopped traffic, Whitaker jumped from the driver’s seat and was arrested. His license had also been suspended since 2018 because he didn’t respond to a subpoena.
While Whitaker was in custody, officers received information that he had recently been involved in a shooting. The police also found a gun in his car.
They took him to a police station and read his rights to Miranda, but decided not to speak.
Whitaker was suspended on three counts of attempted first-degree murder, one charge of domestic violence, one charge of firearm in a dangerous crime, one charge of speeding and one charge of driving license.
