Helen Jones, a grandmother who works as a phlebotomist in Philadelphia, is now blind after being attacked with acid outside the home by her family
The incident occurred on the morning of Oct. 6, when a man approached a 61-year-old woman and sprayed sulfuric acid in her face, according to Philadelphia police.
Jones walked in her car parked a short distance from her Germantown home for 20 years to draw blood from a patient’s nursing home when she was attacked, her daughter Aneesha Summerville told WPVI.

“There was a man and she said, ‘Hey, are you okay? “Like researching her safety and making sure she’s okay,” Summerville said. “And when she looked up and said ‘yes,’ she threw the thing in her face and ran away.”
Summerville posted on the GoFundMe page, created in support of Jones, that “a chemical attack left him blind in both eyes.”
“Our family was not prepared for such destruction,” he said from the side.
According to Summerville, the family now has a “loss of wages” and her mother “has several rapidly growing medical bills, trauma care needs, appointments, daily prescriptions and disability services.”
“We are creating this fund to help overcome the never-ending bills and chaos that this unknown masked man has caused Helen and our family,” he wrote, describing the fundraiser. “Helen’s journey to recovery has only just begun and we appreciate everyone who wants to help us, help her.”
Summerville told WPVI that her mother did not know who attacked her because the suspect was wearing a face mask, which COVID-19 regulations require that most people wear in public
“It was completely unexpected,” he said. He saw her eyes. If I could see him again, I would have recognized his eyes.
Philadelphia Police Department detective Michael McCarrick previously said the attack was a “completely random incident.”
“If nothing has happened in 20 years, it probably won’t happen in 20 years. But with that, we still have to investigate,” she told WPVI.
A spokesman for the Philadelphia Police Department told people Wednesday that an investigation was underway by the Northwest Detective Department. No arrests have been made so far.
