Jake Gardner, the owner of the white bar, who was accused of the death of a 22-year-old black man during the George Floyd protests in May last week, committed suicide.

The 38-year-old man committed suicide after police responded to a call about a suicidal person in Hillsboro, Oregon. Authorities spoke anonymously with the Omaha World Herald.

“At approximately 12:20 pm, Hillsboro Police Department officers responded to the 300 block of SE Ninth Avenue after a body was found outside a medical clinic,” the deceased Hillsboro police said.

Gardner owned the Omaha Hive Bar and killed James Scurlock after an argument during the May protests, five days after George Floyd died in police custody. Gardner was charged last week with attempted first-degree assault, use of weapons, terrorist threats and murder, but had not yet surrendered.

Gardner had fled Omaha before being charged with receiving death threats, the Omaha World Herald reported.

He is expected to return to Omaha on Sunday night, his attorney Stu Dornan told KETV.

“Jake Gardner’s family has asked Tom Monaghan and I to share the news of his death today with their own hands and to refer to Gardner’s other attorney.
