An 88-year-old Oregon man James Edward Wheeler has been indicted by a grand jury with the murder of his 87-year-old wife. He told police he wanted to kill himself because of health issues, the Mail tribune reports.
James Edward Wheeler, who was charged with second degree murder on Friday, allegedly shot Joan Marcella Wheeler in the head with a 20-gauge shotgun he had owned since he was 12, according to the newspaper. Then he entered the laundry room and committed suicide.
First responders arrived at Wheeler’s home in Medford just before 9 a.m. Monday to find Joan Wheeler dead and her husband seriously injured. He was taken to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center for surgery and arrested later that day.
Wheeler reportedly told police that they both had “health issues” and that he decided they were “better dead than alive,” according to court documents from Jackson County detectives.
Wheeler appeared on CCTV television at the trial, wearing an anti-suicide suit and seated in a wheelchair, the newspaper said.
He was detained unconditionally because Oregon law does not allow those charged with first or second degree murder to be released from prison “if the evidence is clear or there is a strong suspicion that the no one is guilty “.
