“I will not lose my son by the end of 2020 and I will lose my country and my republic in 2021,” the Democrat of Maryland promised during a state of the union appearance on CNN.
“It will not happen.”
Thomas, Raskin’s 25-year-old son
Thomas, Raskin’s 25-year-old son, committed suicide on December 31 after a long battle with depression.
“He had an overwhelming love for humanity and our country in his heart and truly for everyone in the world,” said Raskin, describing “a life that dazzled”.
Raskin remembered his son, a second year student at Harvard Law School, as a talented slam poet championing human rights and animal welfare.
Lawmakers said he had the memory of his son with him and felt it “in my chest” – including on January 6, when a crowd of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to prevent confirmation of Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
“I felt my son with me,” said Raskin, who received a visit from his youngest daughter and son-in-law on Capitol Hill that day.
They “were trapped in a room on the floor of the house, and between them and I was a raging armed mob that could easily have killed them and knocked on doors with my Chief of Staff, where they were hiding under a desk “. Raskin said.
Five people died in the invasion, including a Capitol Hill policeman who was sprayed with pepper spray and beaten to death with a fire extinguisher.
Raskin has said his son is spiritually with him as he continues as the senior lawmaker who has been hired by House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi to accuse Trump of inciting this riot.
“First of all, I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to turn President Pelosi down on anything,” Raskin said, explaining why he had agreed to shoulder the burden. “But she was actually very sensitive and caring. She wanted me to do it because she knows that I have dedicated my life to the Constitution and the Republic.
“But I really did it with my son in my heart and helped lead the way.”
