A 33-year-old man from Georgia was convicted of murdering his grandmother in 2018 after beating her with a slow cooker and stabbing her in the chest with a kitchen knife.

Jared Randall Carter was sentenced to death for Valeria Jean Mann, 81, by Warner Robins on Friday June 2018.

The Telegraph of Macon reports that a Houston County jury ruled for more than two hours before convicting Carter. He was subsequently sentenced to a sentence ranging from 30 years to life imprisonment.

Witnesses said Carter and Mann had a controversial relationship after Carter moved south from his hometown of New York to live with Mann.

Carter was arrested after asking a neighbor to call 911 the night Mann died. Carter told police he walked in and found the man dead on the floor of his apartment.

Prosecutors said Carter believed he assaulted his grandmother because he wanted her to leave. Her Connecticut friend is reportedly planning to move into Mann’s Warner Robins home.

A social worker and a police officer testified that Mann had previously told them that Carter was emotionally and verbally abusive and that she was afraid of him. However, the woman did not ask authorities to intervene in hopes of convincing Carter to go alone.

Carter spoke out on Friday morning and said he and her husband were “very close” and that she was a second mother to him.

When asked on Friday if he killed his grandmother, The Telegraph reported that Carter replied, “No, I didn’t.”

Prosecutor Alicia Gassett told the jury that Mann “died in the most excruciating and unimaginable manner” and showed them a three-foot-long chef’s knife believed to be a murder weapon.

Gassett spoke about the broken ceramic bowl that Mann’s assailant cleaned up and threw away after the murder.

“It shows you how much force this man exerted on this little … 81-year-old woman,” Gassett said.

The prosecutor also shared the testimony of a friend of Mann’s, who said Mann told him that “if anything happened to me, (Carter) would have done it.”
