Schmitz was a corporal in St. Charles County, Missouri, according to KMOX.
“His life meant so much more. I’m so devastated that I can’t see the man he became so quickly, ”Schmitz’s father Mark Schmitz told the shop.
The distraught father said his son, who had always dreamed of becoming a soldier, was on his first deployment and was sent to Afghanistan from Jordan. He was informed of his son’s death at around 2:40 am.
State Representative Nick Schroer wrote a Facebook post about the death.
