Laura Huteson, 21, died of a stab wound after Jason Gaskell held a knife to his neck at his home when they had s*x in February 2018.
A court heard that he severed her artery during a “bizarre and violent sado-masochistic” ritual that took place a few hours after they met.
He was sentenced to six years of grossly negligent manslaughter at Sheffield Crown Court in August 2018. After his release last month, he is now a free man.
Laura’s family claim his verdict was far too short and her cousin Holly Hayward said “the wounds have really been reopened” since he was released.
She told Hull Live: “We have a feeling that Laura has been completely disappointed with the system and we want to know how, given all his previous violent beliefs, her killer got such a short sentence and just can’t believe he’s a free man . ” now.
“Laura deserves justice and the courts have failed and we and Gaskell should have stopped earlier so that this would never happen to our Laura.
“How can he live his life now when she’s gone?”
Holly described Laura as “a loving and lovable person” but said she was struggling with serious mental health problems and that the support services had “completely failed”.
“Laura left, but I keep expecting her to walk through the door,” she added.
“If I could only see Laura again, I would thank you for being in our lives and for being such a brilliant mother to her son and friend.
“She was kind, caring, funny, lively and you always knew when she came into a room when she lit it up and was the life and soul of the party and had a heart of gold.”
The family thanked Hull wife Kayleigh Pepper, whose brother died in June 2015 after being stabbed, for helping set up a fundraising page for Laura’s funeral.
They also thanked Jason Manford for sharing the page to raise funds, and Holly said Laura was “honored and proud” that the comedian “stood up for her”.
Gaskell was originally charged with murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) instead accepted a guilty manslaughter confession.
Prior to sentencing, the court heard that Gaskell killed the mother of a child during s*x after holding a knife hidden under his pillow to her neck and using “light to moderate force” to cause the injury .
Her artery was severed and she died in her bed from significant blood loss.
The couple had met earlier that evening and they were both drunk and on drugs.
The court heard that Gaskell looked half-naked, covered in blood and “possessed” when he ran outside after being fatally injured.
He made a “very desperate” 999 call just after 9:00 am on February 27 and telephoned ambulance for 22 minutes.
During the call, he lied to the operator, claiming Laura “fell” or “rolled” on the knife.
The court heard that he had a number of previous convictions, including an 18-month sentence in York in October 2016 for increased vehicle pickup and theft.
He is also convicted of burglary, assault and threatening behavior.
The Justice Department declined to comment on the case.
