The Charlotte Observer reported that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Sonic drive-in after a 911 call regarding a nearby car accident. A passing motorist told officials who responded that a walking man tried to steal his vehicle from the Sonic, police said.
Authorities said two more Concord police officers had been dispatched to the Sonic, where they found a man who matched the suspect’s description.
He “he pulled out a gun and started shooting at the officers. We believe this is the moment when the officers were injured, ”Chief Gary J. Gacek said at a news conference.
Gacek said two other officers arrived later, saw the injured officers, and shot the suspect.
Concord police have not released the identity of the suspect.
“This loss is devastating not only for the member’s family and loved ones, but also for all police in the city, state and country,” the department said in a statement.
The fatal shooting marks the second time since last week that a police officer has died near Charlotte. Mount Holly Police Officer Tyler Herndon was shot and killed in Gaston County on Friday. A suspect in the shooting is in custody and charged with murder.
