A serial rapist who attacks victims outside bars and nightclubs was jailed for 20 years.

John Chalachew, 33, was convicted of six rapes against three women and one man in 2018.

Some victims fell asleep and woke up when Chalachev slept with them.

During his sentencing in Taunton Crown Court on Friday, Judge James Townsend said that Chalachew had “consistently and repeatedly targeted vulnerable victims.”

The court heard that Plymouth Chalachew targeted drunken victims as they left nightclubs or returned home.

The three female victims were attacked at his home, an apartment building in Mount Gould, while the man was raped in an alley in Plymouth’s Greenbank neighborhood after leaving the Pryzm nightclub.

The double rape occurred after Chalachew took two women home after meeting them for the first time outside of the Crash Manor nightclub on the night of March 23, 2018.

Ray Tully said that Chalachew was a “serial rapist” who frequented bars and nightclubs in Plymouth.

“They were worse at exhausting themselves, falling asleep and then finding out that she had sex with them,” he said.

Chalachev denied the rape allegations and said that sex with the victims was consensual.

The judge paid tribute to the victims for coming forward and protecting the public in Chalachew.

He said Chalachev’s crimes had “profound” effects on the victims.

The court heard that members of the public who intervened saved two other people from the attack.

In the wake of the case, Detective Inspector Paul Otter said: “We are pleased with the current belief that he has been driving a dangerous sexual predator off the streets of Plymouth for a considerable period of time.

“Chalachev attacked them on purpose, taking advantage of his vulnerability to poisoning when they leave nightclubs or return home.

“I would like to commend the courage of the victims in this case, who fully cooperated in the police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings to bring Khalachev to justice.”

The judge, who praised the police investigation, said Khalachev would serve two-thirds of his 20-year sentence before being considered for parole.
