A father of three died after being shot in the head while working as an Uber driver in Cicero.

The violent incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. When  Joseph Schelstraete, 38, was fined near 23rd Street and 55th Avenue in suburban Chicago on Monday, the Cicero Police Department reported.

According to police, Schelstraete was in his blue Ford Focus when four suspects approached his car and tried to kidnap him.

According to the police, one of the suspects shot Schelstraete in the head during the fight before escaping from the scene with the other three attackers.

Schelstraete was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where he died Wednesday morning, his family told CBS 2.

“There are a lot of crazy factors in this tragedy and this is one of them,” said Schelstraete’s aunt Kim Bova. “They shouldn’t have killed him. He would have given them anything they wanted. But because of the misfortune and wickedness of this world, they took his life from him.”

The suspects took “some items” from Schelstraete during the kidnapping attempt, Cicero Police Chief Jerry Chlada Jr. said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Suspect Arrest

Police arrested a young suspect two blocks from the shooting after setting up a perimeter around the scene, Chalda said. Three other suspects remain on the run.

A similar car theft occurred in the same location about three weeks ago, according to Chlada. The police are checking whether the two incidents are related.

“He has three young children and just wanted to earn money,” said Chlada of Schelstraete. “He really is a victim, only unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In a statement to People on Wednesday, an Uber spokesman said: “We are sad to hear of the senseless act of violence that took Mr. Schelstraete’s life. Our hearts are with his family and we work with the police “.
