A 16-year-old girl was shot dead in a hotel room in downtown Atlanta, and police also charged a 16-year-old boy with her murder.
The victim, identified as 16-year-old Kalecia Williams, was shot dead on December 26 at around 12:27 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta on Peachtree Street.
Atlanta Police Department officers arrived at the downtown hotel district and found the teenager with a gunshot wound in the groin.
She was either passed out or was breathing and was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
A male suspect, also 16 years old, was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, reckless driving and possession of a firearm for anyone under 18.
The 16-year-old is in the Metro juvenile detention center and has not been identified by the police due to his young age.
Investigators said the teenager’s shooting occurred after an argument with a young man while the two were in one of the rooms.
Police spokesman Anthony Grant told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was in a room at the Hyatt Regency with an underage partner.
“There was a verbal argument between the two parties which resulted in the young man fatally shooting the victim.”
The teen’s shooting was one of three murders reported in the city within 24 hours. That brought the number of murders in Atlanta to 154 that year.
In a statement released Saturday afternoon, a Hyatt Regency hotel spokesman said: “We are saddened by the isolated situation that occurred at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta this morning, and our hearts go out to those affected. .
“The hotel is fully cooperating with the local authorities in its investigation. Additional questions can be directed to the Atlanta Police Department.”
