New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the shooting at a birthday party was a “targeted attack” and officials await further arrests.
According to the report, police in Bridgeton, a neighboring town and county seat of Cumberland County, received an anonymous phone call following the shooting that reported a person with a gun in a wooded area behind the apartments in Maplewood Gardens.
The agents arrived at the Maple Drive apartments and found Dawkins “lying next to a tree with a gun in his right hand,” the complaint said. Officers ordered Dawkins to drop the gun, and he did, the document says.
Records show that Dawkins’ arrest by Agent Dominic Pizzo took place around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. The pistol is a .40 caliber Glock 23 model loaded with 22 cartridges.
Dawkins lives on the 800 block on East Commerce Street, which, along with the Maple Street apartments, is less than three miles from the location.
Michael Gaimari Said ?
Bridgeton Police Chief Michael Gaimari said in a statement that Pizzo and officials were assisting the New Jersey State Police at the shooting range shortly before the arrest and that all information related to Dawkins’ arrest has been passed to that agency.
“It was a great job by Officer Pizzo and other agents helping to arrest this suspect without harming themselves or the suspect because he could have gone south quickly,” said Gaimari.
Dawkins was originally arrested on four firearm charges, including illegal possession of a firearm, possession for an illegal purpose, and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. Later Monday, records revealed that Bridgeton police had brought two additional charges against Dawkins of possession of a gun as a convicted felon.
He appeared at the Cumberland County Superior Court on Monday afternoon for a virtual appearance. He will reappear for a hearing on Thursday at which the Cumberland County Prosecutor will announce that he is being held pending trial, Attorney Jennifer Webb-McRae said.
Webb-McRae declined to enter into Dawkins Monday night, citing an ongoing investigation.
Asia Hester, 25, and Kevin Elliott, 30, were killed in the shooting and several victims remain in hospital on Monday.
