Two masked thieves broke into Linda Ellis’ home in Goldsboro around 1 a.m. Saturday, demanding money and shooting her grandmother in the leg.

Ellis’ grandson responded to the two intruders in self-defense and they fled.

Khalil Herring, 19, was later found at an intersection half a block from the apartment.

He was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care, where he later died of his injuries.

Police said they found evidence that Herring was one of two masked men in the apartment.

Incident details

“Preliminary evidence suggests that Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders and that he was shot during the theft,” authorities said in a statement.

“A child under 12, a resident of the residence, shot the suspects with a gun in self-defense and forced them to flee the area.”

Ellis was also rushed to hospital, where her family say she is in good condition and is expected to be released on Monday.

“They walked into the house, I open the door, I open them and they walked in,” Ellis’ son and the boy’s great-uncle, Randolph Bunn, told ABC 11.

A boy had a gun. They just threw me on the floor … [Ellis] was in the kitchen, I don’t know why they shot him.

“[The intruder] just shot his grandmother … He would have shot her too, he would have shot me too, he would have killed us all,” Bunn added, referring to the actions of the 12 year old teenager.

Ellis’ great-granddaughter, Chiquita Coley, added that she couldn’t believe it when she got a call about the attempted robbery.

“My phone kept ringing and it kept ringing and ringing,” Coley said. “He couldn’t believe he was shot because he was a good person.”

“Why would someone come into your house and do this?” This has to stop, ”he continued, adding that his aunt was very much loved by the community.

“I don’t know what you think here in Goldsboro, but this has to end.”

Police say no charges are planned against the 12-year-old, but the investigation is ongoing.

Coley said the boy and the rest of the family “stayed together”.

Police said they had made no further arrests regarding the second suspect in the home invasion.
