“The attacker was a disturbed man, born in Fréjus, who has no criminal record and who pulled several knives.

“We have to wonder if this was a premeditated attack as he had obtained a 7cm knife days before the attack.

“I would like to thank the emergency services, although the priest is currently in the emergency room, he is well taken care of and we are in constant contact with him and despite everything he is well, awake and alert.

“The national and local police worked together in an exceptional way to neutralize the situation and secure the church of Saint Pierre d’Arène as quickly as possible.”

President Macron, then visiting polling stations in northern France, is expected to win Sunday’s election against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, although a low turnout could cause excitement.
