The Defense Ministry on Saturday identified the five US soldiers Seth Vernon Vandekamp, Gearld Garza, Marwan Sameh Ghabour, Kyle Robert McKee and Jeremy Cain Sherman who were killed in a helicopter crash on the southern tip of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula this week.

Seven members of the army, including a French air force officer and a Czech soldier, were killed when their UH-60 Black Hawk crashed near the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea Thursday. In a Pentagon statement, the five dead Americans were identified as follows:

  • Capt. Seth Vernon Vandekamp, 31, of Katy, Texas;
  • Chief Warrant Officer 3 Dallas Gearld Garza, 34, of Fayetteville, N.C.;
  • Chief Warrant Officer 2 Marwan Sameh Ghabour, 27, from Marlborough, Mass.;
  • Staff Sgt. Kyle Robert McKee, 35, of Painesville, Ohio; and
  • Sgt. Jeremy Cain Sherman, 23, from Watseka, Ill.

“It is with deep sadness that we mourn this tragic loss of human life,” said Col. David S. Sentell, commander of Task Force Sinai. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and loved ones of our dead during this most difficult time. They must know that their nation will continue to honor their sacrifice. ”

The U.S. Army Task Force, made up of approximately 450 U.S. troops, is the largest contingent of the Multinational Force and Observers, a peacekeeping mission comprised of troops from 13 countries that oversees the agreement to Israel-Egypt peace of 1979 since 1981.

The French Air and Space Force previously identified Lieutenant-Colonel Sébastien Botta, a 21-year-old veteran and deputy head of the MFO liaison office, as one of the other servicemen killed in the accident.

Czech army sergeant Michaela Ticha was also killed in the crash, the country’s chief of staff said in a statement on Thursday.

“We have lost one of us,” said Czech general Ales Opata. “I am so sorry. … My condolences to the family.”

Another American injured in the crash was medically evacuated to an Israeli hospital. The soldier is said to be in critical condition.

The cause of the crash continues to be investigated, but the Rome-based MFO has said it appears to be a mechanical failure.
