Nelson was dismissed with honor from the United States Marine Corps in 1996, according to Pasadena police lieutenant William Grisafe. Nelson previously worked in the Los Angeles County Department of Public Security until joining the Sheriff’s Department in 2010.
Grisafe said Nelson may also have served in the army and air force reserves
Grisafe said Nelson may also have served in the army and air force reserves. He had no criminal record, said the lieutenant.
The incident began when a Pasadena policeman saw Nelson make an illegal turn, park in the middle of the street and get out of the car, officials said.
The policeman tried to speak to Nelson, but got back in the car and drove away. The officers chased Nelson in vehicles and with a helicopter before a supervisor canceled the chase on the ground and let the helicopter take over. Nelson drove slowly, but did not stop for the red light and stop signs, the video shows.
Police in patrol vehicles started chasing him again and forced an accident using an intervention maneuver designed to stop a car. The video shows that Nelson opened fire while he was still sitting after his car hit a police vehicle.
Nelson got out of the car and continued to shoot while the police retaliated.
Nelson was hit several times and died at the scene, officials said. Police said they found two other guns loaded in his car.
