Mahathir Mohamad- World’s Oldest Prime Minister
The world’s oldest Prime Minister came to power in 2018. In an unexpected victory, he ousted then Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was associated with a multi-billion dollar scandal involving public funds.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the resignation was filed at 1:00 p.m. local time (5:00 a.m. GMT). No other details were included in the declaration.
It is unclear who will be the next prime minister – or whether new elections will be called.
The 94-year-old also left Bersatu, where he was president of the political party.
Mahathir Mohamad- Mr Anwar Accused Him “Form New Govenmnet”
Bersatu was part of the Pakatan Harapan opposition power alliance, which Mahatir joined in 2018 with Anwar.
Anwar accused Mahatir and his party of being “traitors” on Sunday, saying they intended to form a new government, possibly without him. But on Monday, Mr. Mahathir resigned.
Despite this, the BBC correspondent in Southeast Asia, Jonathan Head, said that Mahathir may not be really ready to resign.
“In 94 Mahathir Muhammad is still the main manipulator of Malaysian politics, and few believe he is ready to resign, despite the dramatic resignation proposal he has just sent to the country’s constitutional monarch,” said he declared.
“It is even possible that Mr. Mahathir remains Prime Minister.”
