MCD said Markez Delmont Smith, 20, of McComb was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Firefighters say much of the McComb Railroad Depot was destroyed by the fire. However, the crews say they were able to salvage most of the artifacts in the part of the depot dedicated to the McComb Railroad Museum.
“It did some smoke, water, and heat damage, but we were able to salvage the artifacts,” said McComb Assistant Fire Department chief Jason Howell.
The crews were still clearing hotspots on Sunday afternoon.
The building is on North Railroad Boulevard. It serves as a railroad depot for Amtrack, as well as a meeting place for a local civic organization and a tourist area, Powell said.
Howell estimates that between 65 and 70 percent of the building will be lost.
“The north end was a total loss,” he said. “The fire reached the attic and burned more of the attic than the museum. We could stop the fire before it all burned up. “
