A man Matthew Crawford believed to be Britain’s fattest and once weighing 55 stone has died aged 37.

Matthew Crawford made headlines when he cost the NHS hundreds of thousands by blocking four hospital beds for 18 months.
Friends said he was back in the hospital last week and died of sepsis and organ failure.

Lee Howe said on Facebook: “Rest in peace Matthew Crawford aka Fatkid.

“Peace with your father, mate.”

Jamie Howe added: “I’m actually in shock. Rest in peace Matt, now you’re with your dad making havoc up there like you used to.

“Guna miss you buddy.”

Another friend said: “Omg I’m sorry to hear this sad news, Matt was a great boy. RiP Matt.”

Rangers and Lincoln City fan Matthew was considered one of the fattest people in Britain after the death of cab driver Barry Austin last year.

He was over 55 stone at his worst when he was admitted to Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, in 2018.

He ended up staying for a year and a half, sleeping in reinforced beds, costing the NHS £7,000 a week.

Although he was declared healthy enough to be discharged, he was unable to walk due to the lack of appropriate social care.

Matthew reportedly ordered pizzas and Chinese takeaways on the station during his extended stay.

He even posed with a bottle of champagne in his hospital bed.

A source said at the time: “Everyone is fed up with the situation.

“There is nothing medically wrong with Matt now, but we are powerless to get rid of him.

“It takes up much-needed bed space reserved for sick patients.”

His mother, Linda, denied staff claims that she ordered him takeout on the ward.

She said in October 2018: “He’s waiting to move (to a nursing home). They are just waiting for the equipment to be installed.”

The Sun told how Matt previously boasted about wasting his unemployment benefits on a 65-inch TV, a £80-a-month Sky package and £100 away football days.

Before he was admitted, he was prosecuted for assaulting four nurses at a nursing home where he lived.

The conviction is said to have made it difficult for him to find another job, so he was unable to leave the hospital.

Matthew was eventually released in December 2019 and was pictured raising his arms in the air while standing on a weighbridge.

He was reported to have joined Slimmers Worlds, but it is unknown if he has lost weight in the years since.

Birmingham cab driver Barry Austin held the title of Britain’s fattest man when he tipped the scales at 65th.

In later years he was bedridden and emaciated by illness. He died of a heart attack last January at the age of 52.

The title is said to have passed to Jason Colton, who weighed in at 50th but had lost weight to 45th.

Last year he asked for gastric bypass surgery after being towed from his home in Surrey by crane.
