A Georgia man has been arrested in the 18-year-old murders of a prominent Turner County family, including the 20-year-old daughter Melissa Wideman of the family who was carrying his child, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Wednesday.

A grand jury has sued Jason Michael Walker, 47, who now lives in Pulaski County, for the murder of Thomas Joseph “Tommy Joe” Wideman, 51; Deborah Wideman, 48; and Melissa Wideman, who was eight months pregnant. He was also charged with feticide for causing fetal death, grievous bodily harm and first degree arson.
The family were found on March 22, 2002 when a passing truck driver called Rebecca for reporting a house fire in town. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the Widemans; An autopsy revealed that all three had been fatally shot before the fire started.
The Turner County Sheriff’s Office immediately called for help, but despite extensive investigations leading to the development of several suspects, no arrests were made, leaving family members frustrated by the lack of progress. The Widemans were prominent residents of the District of Central Georgia – Tommy Joe Wideman was the district tax officer and his wife owned the Oak Tree bridal boutique in downtown Ashburn. Melissa was a student.
The investigation was reassigned in 2014, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. During a review of the case, a new witness came in and “identified a white man who appeared to be leaving the Wideman residence during the period in which the murders were being committed”. the first investigators as well as the new investigators had received.
Investigators presented their case to Tifton Judicial Circuit District Attorney Paul Bowden, who presented it to a Turner County grand jury on Tuesday. This grand jury indicted Walker.
Walker was arrested and detained in Turner County Jail on Wednesday, the GBI said, and Bowden’s office will take charge of the prosecution.
