Utah authorities arrested a 40-year-old man after allegedly stealing the dog from his ex-girlfriend’s family and setting the animal on fire.

Michael Paul Busico, 40, was arrested Tuesday in Tooele County Jail for pet torture, burglary, theft and arson.

The Salt Lake County Animal Welfare Department reported Monday night that police received a call about a dog that was set on fire near the town of Magna.

Upon arrival, officials found the animal, identified as a female red tick, roaming a bush with burns on its face and body. Zookeepers said the brush caught fire too.

The dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic, where workers found that the animal had suffered second and third degree burns to the head, pelvis, back, stomach and mouth.

One person who witnessed the incident told police the suspect was a shaved head driving a green Toyota Tacoma van.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune

Police received a report of a stolen dog that same day. The dog’s owner reportedly informed investigators that the suspect was with his dog when he left the house and that they were both missing when he returned home.

In an affidavit received from Deseret News, police said the woman told investigators that she believed her ex-busico had stolen her pet “in retaliation for their failed relationship.”

The affidavit states that the dog’s family contacted the police after “seeing their dog on the news and recognizing it in the photos” and that the description reported by the suspect matches Busico and his vehicle.

“The investigation found [Busico] in a dispute with the victim’s mother over $ 1,200 and a past relationship that ended,” the affidavit read. “Mr. Busico specifically targeted his ex-girlfriend’s daughter’s dog.”

“Based on my education and experience, I believe Mr Busico targeted the victim’s pet in order to directly intimidate and threaten her and her ex-girlfriend,” one official wrote in the affidavit.

In the affidavit, police said Busico tried to flee when officers approached him on a relative’s house but was caught about 100 meters later, according to Deseret News.

It is not known whether Busico has been given a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

In an update released Tuesday, Salt Lake County Animal Services announced that the dog, which is in critical condition, has been reunited with its owner.

“The result of the dog is currently still uncertain,” said a statement by the zoo keeper. “He’s currently taking fluids and pain medication.”
