Ellerin was found stabbed and nearly beheaded dozens of times while Bruno’s body was mutilated in his sleep, prosecutors said during the trial. Due to the violent nature of the murders, the killer was nicknamed “The Hollywood Ripper”. But prosecutor Dan Akemon said he looked more like the “boy next door”, noting that he lived close to all of his he victims and seemed obsessed with them before their murders.
Gargiulo was tried under the administration of former Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey. A judge declined to read the testimony of current District Attorney George Gascon, who opposed the death penalty, before the verdict was pronounced.
