Authorities said the Underhill Field shooting “did not pose a threat to the public,” but declined to disclose a possible motive.
There have been no more arrests since Monday afternoon.
In a letter to parents posted by Village Green, Columbia High School principal Frank Sanchez claimed Fofana was a young man.
“This unimaginable calamity is undoubtedly a devastating blow to our students, staff and the community,” wrote Ronald Taylor, Superintendent of South Orange Maplewood, in a separate letter to parents.
Suzanne Fein, who previously taught Fofana at Maplewood High School, said the teenager was “adored and loved” at school.
“Mossa loved nothing more than human attachment,” he told Village Green. A student who never left without a thank you and a friendly smile, grateful to all who are committed to him. A positive light in our world is dimmed and our hearts are forever sad. ‘
Fofana is on this year’s Columbia High School football roster, Patch Maplewood reported.
The Orange South and Maplewood School District provided student and staff counselors for high schools and other schools in the district.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy spoke about the shooting at a press conference Monday, calling it a “new case of gun violence between us.”
