Nancy Barnett Died on Saturday
Nancy Barnett of Ewing, died on Saturday at the wreckage site in Fleming County after hitting a pickup truck, the Kentucky State Police Department told the chief of the Lexington Herald.
Barnett’s husband Lyndon Barnett, 56, later died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Her two sons – Dalton (18) and Michael (26) – were also taken to hospital for treatment after the accident, state police said.
They remained in hospital early Monday, said a nurse. Dalton Barnett was in stable condition while Michael Barnett was in critical but stable condition, she said.
Stephanie Emmons, principal of Fleming County High School, said the family was involved in the accident “shortly after” Dalton’s graduation ceremony.
“We learned that her mother Nancy Barnett and her father died as a result of the accident,” said Emmons in a statement on Saturday. “Please continue to raise this family with your thoughts and prayers during this time.”
Earlier Saturday, Nancy was wearing a shirt that showed her pride as an “older mother” when she graduated from Dalton, school officials said in a joint statement.
“Senior Mom: Some people wait their whole lives for inspiration,” was his shirt. “I raised mine. Class of 2020.”
The comforting shirt showed just how much the devoted mother thought of her son, officials said.
“The Barnetts mean a lot to our community in Fleming County and we will be there to help Dalton and his brother get through these tough times,” said the statement.
The graduation ceremony in Flemingsburg, closed to the public, lasted more than 12 hours due to social distancing measures. Only one senior graduate and six parents were allowed to be on campus at any time, reported the Herald Leader.
The first student graduated before 8 a.m., while the last student graduated around 9 p.m., according to Facebook posts cited by the newspaper.
Dalton was one of the first graduates to go on stage at the ceremony, reports WLEX.
The grieving student, called the “cute young man,” plans to join the military, school officials said.
“It is always a pleasure to be with him and his family has always been very proud of him,” said Emmons and Creasman.
The driver of the truck, Anthony Bailey, 52, and his passenger, Nancy Bailey, were not injured in the accident. An investigation is underway, reports WLEX.
