Narelle Fiona Smith, 46, was arrested by officers on a block in east Sydney and charged with the death of Peter McCarthy, 77.

Mr. McCarthy was found dead on December 20 at his home on Elphinstone Road, South Coogee, with serious head and face injuries.

Homicide detective officers returned Monday afternoon and arrested Smith in a unit next to Mr. McCarthy’s house.

The media was there at the time of the arrest, and Smith told a Nine News reporter, “Peter was my friend. I was there for my birthday.

She claimed it had nothing to do with Mr. McCarthy’s death.

‘Not at all. I wouldn’t do that, he’s my friend, ”she said.

Mr. McCarthy’s last confirmed sighting was on December 16 at the York Club in Sydney CBD. Four days later, his ex-wife discovered his body.

The police refused to say when they believed he had been fatally attacked.

Mr. McCarthy’s family remain in contact with detectives and have been informed of the woman’s arrest.

“I think these are mixed feelings for her,” said Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty.

“You have just passed Christmas without a father or grandfather.

“You are still recovering from the grief of losing Peter.

Mr. McCarthy’s neighbor, Michelle Turneley, said, “Peter was a good old man and he was very fragile.

Superintendent Doherty said, “There is very important forensic and physical evidence to make this a solid and convincing case.

“Mr. McCarthy suffered severe head and face injuries, but I will not go into the circumstances that were used,” he said.

In December, Superintendent Doherty said the autopsy and the crime scene indicated that Mr. McCarthy had been the victim of “violent and brutal” attack and robbery.

His school bag and phone were also stolen from his home.

Smith was charged with murder and fraud.

She was denied bail prior to appearing in local Waverley court on Tuesday.
