Niall Kirkpatrick, 62, was killed after being hit by a car on a country road while cycling with a friend in Fairstead, Essex, Sunday morning.
A 65-year-old man is taken into custody on suspicion of being killed by negligent driving.
Mr. Kirkpatrick worked for both the NHS and a private practice on Harley Street, London, which attracted high profile patients from around the world.
He was also a specialist in pediatric craniofacial surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and a leading expert in head and neck surgery.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was also widely recognized as one of the world’s leading facelift surgeons.
He lived with his wife Anahita and three sons aged 17, 21 and 26 in West London in a £ 2.2 million house and is said to have exceeded his NHS job, private counseling and television work Earned £ 500,000 a year.
He was previously featured extensively on the television show Botched Up Bodies, correcting cosmetic surgeries that went catastrophically wrong.
In 2012, Mr. Kirkpatrick headed a medical team that was known to “rebuild” the face of Ali Hussein, an Iraqi teenager who was seriously injured in an American air strike in 2003 when he was only 7 years old.
It earned him a spot among the top 100 UK pediatricians.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was also known for his work with the Facing the World charity, which focuses on children in Vietnam with facial deformities.
In his role as medical director and surgeon, he regularly visited the country to perform operations and participated in fundraising campaigns.
Former colleagues, patients and friends used social media to pay tribute to Mr. Kirkpatrick, who described him as a “brilliant and extraordinary” doctor and man.
The British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) opened a virtual book of condolence and said in a statement: “We regret to inform you that Niall Kirkpatrick is today [9 January] was tragically killed in a traffic accident. He was cycling and was hit by a car.
“He was an extraordinary man and a great doctor. He has influenced and trained many colleagues over the years and was very, very active at BAPRAS. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. ‘
One colleague wrote: “Niall was the greatest consultant to work with, taught me so much and became a great friend. He was kind, caring, patient, inspiring, and great fun too. He made me a better plastic surgeon. ”
Another wrote: “Niall was one of the most sincere men who honored this earth.”
A relative of one of his former patients stated, “Devastated by this news, I met Dr. Kirkpatrick and my daughter’s second surgery were scheduled for the end of this month.
“During our conversations he left the impression of a true gentleman with an infinite friendliness. My condolences go out to his wife and sons. RIP Dr. Kirkpatrick. ‘
The neuropsychiatrist Dr. Alastair Santhouse wrote on Twitter: “I am heartbroken that my friend Niall Kirkpatrick has passed away.
“Aside from being a surgeon, he had an artist’s eye and was one of the nicest men I have ever met.”
Harley Street Eye Specialist Dr. Sabrina Shah-Desai described him as a “kind mentor” and “graceful person”. She added, “I have no words to express the sadness I have felt since hearing the news of Niall’s untimely death this week.”
Essex Police said emergency services were called on Sunday at around 10:30 am for reports of the collision with a car and two cyclists in Fairstead, Essex.
In a police statement it says: “We took part and unfortunately one of the cyclists – a man in his 60s – was pronounced dead at the scene.”
“The other cyclist sustained injuries to his face.”
A 65-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being killed by negligent driving and is currently in custody.
