Nashville Subway Police Officer Josh Baker stopped a vehicle at 9:30 a.m. Friday because the owner was wanted on six pending drug warrants, police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters.
Nika Holbert Age
Nika Holbert, 31, was driving the black Chevrolet Camaro, but her real owner was the criminal Demond Buchanan, 42.
Images released by police show Baker looking into Holbert’s pocket and finding a powdered substance in a small pocket.
Baker then tries to stop Holbert, but she shows resistance and runs away yelling, “Don’t handcuff me!” I did not do anything wrong!
Holbert jumps back into the driver’s seat as Baker pulls the Taser out of her and unfolds it against her.
The officer grabs the woman by her hand and tries to get her out of the car, but he grabs a gun with her other hand.
“Ma’am, put your gun down on her!” Baker yells at the woman as she opens fire on him.
The agent returns fire and collapses as the black Camaro pulls out of the parking lot and drives away.
Baker was able to radio the “shots” and report to the dispatch department that he had been hit by a bullet that went under his bulletproof vest.
Holbert tossed his semiautomatic pistol into the parking lot and hit an intersection a block away before losing control and crashing into the sidewalk.
She was shot and injured in the fight and pronounced dead at Skyline Medical Center, police said.
Baker was shot in the chest and had surgery Friday afternoon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Aaron said. The 14-year veteran has been stable since Saturday, police said and in good spirits.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting of the officers and will report its findings to the Attorney General.
Chief Drake, after reviewing the video footage from the body camera and dash cam, said he felt that Baker acted within the department’s guidelines.
“He seemed to be doing everything he could to add to the situation, including using the Taser, including trying not to use his weapon,” Drake told WKRN.
Holbert’s adoptive mother, Lisa Holbert-Gooch, told the Tennessean that the 31-year-old woman mistakenly drew a gun, but that she was concerned about the actions of the officer who shot her daughter.
