COVID-19 security protocols
COVID-19 security protocols for lawyers and experts dominated a Tuesday morning status hearing for Nikolas Cruz, the suspect in the mass shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Cruz is alleged to have killed 17 people at Parkland High School on Valentine’s Day 2018.
During the hearing, Defense attorney Gordon Weekes asked for more details on the prison’s security protocols and the sheriff’s office schedule to be made available to guests entering the prison to speak to Cruz.
Weekes suggested rapid tests for those who come in contact with Cruz. Broward Circuit judge Elizabeth Scherer said she did not have the authority to require the sheriff’s office or prison to conduct rapid tests. A sheriff’s office spokesman said there was no need to run quick tests, but assured the other measures were safe.
Judge Scherer continued the hearing through December, urging both sides to go there.
